CherYsh welcomed new Trustee, Mr. Vikram Kaushik.

Vikram brings over 40 years of experience working for world-class companies. He worked in leadership positions at Unilever (17 years) and Danone a joint venture partner with Britannia (5 years), and at Colgate Palmolive (4 years) in India where he served on the Board.

Vikram Kaushik currently is actively involved as an advisor on business strategy to a Tata Group company – Voltas; on the Board of MTS (Sistema) and Hemas, the second largest FMCG business in Srilanka.; whilst also mentoring high potential start-ups like Amagi Media Labs, Lukup Media and Tagos.

Mr. Richard Saldanha, retired from Trusteeship at CherYsh after serving for six years and nurturing CherYsh closely in its formative years. He will now join the CherYsh Global Advisory Board.

'Women of Worth' Award

Dr. Meena Kaushik, Member, CherYsh Executive Committee, was felicitated with the ‘Women of Worth Award’ in November 2017, by Outlook Business.

The award was conferred on top women entrepreneurs in India. Dr. Kaushik is regarded among “super achievers” and honored for her contribution to women-led entrepreneurship.

Induction of New Project Coordinator, Haliyal

Mr. Neelakant Sheshagiri took charge as the new Project Coordinator of CherYsh Trust, Haliyal. Neelkant is a senior resource with depth experience in managing social work, especially educational projects in several districts of Karnataka. His leadership will bring in deeper levels of community engagement, monitoring, and reporting from the field. Neelakant attended at a two-day induction programme with the field team, and the CherYsh team at Bangalore in November.

New Edition of RITE

CherYsh and the BVB College of Engineering and Technology signed up to a new edition of RITE (Rural Innovation Through Education) 2017-18. Student engagement in education and the potential for innovation was discussed with the faculty and management. An orientation session for the new batch of volunteers is planned in August. The following activities will be conducted as part of RITE.

- Evaluation of students and Learning Facilitators
- Training support to Learning Facilitators
- Teaching students (Math/Computer Skills)
- Data collection – support to documentation of data collected by Learning Facilitators.

Buzz India partnership for Entrepreneurship Training

The CherYsh SaLT series welcomed a new partner organization – Buzz India – to deliver Financial Literacy training to women members of the Community Kitchens. Seasoned Trainer, Chandrasekariah, conducted the training sessions.

Engaging the ecosystem: Project BEACON

In an effort to utilise the large quantum of sugarcane biomass, CherYsh, EID Parry, Haliyal, and KLE Tech, Hubballi have entered a partnership to explore solutions for clean energy alternative fuels.

Pilot project – Beekeeping

Introductory meetings to promote beekeeping activity were held by members of the Hive Trust. The objective of the pilot project is to determine the livelihood potential of this activity.

New Trainer enlisted for Active Rural Curriculum

A new trainer - Malathi H.D. -  was enlisted to join the Active Rural Curriculum Training team. She is well-versed in aspects of active learning in rural areas, participatory approaches, and design of monitoring and evaluation systems. Malathi contributes to the progress of all CherYsh Learning Facilitators.

Board Meeting deliberations at CherYsh

Strategic themes that promote growth and sustainability at CherYsh were discussed at the thought-leaders’ meeting as part of Pre-Board Meeting deliberations. The objective was to explore strategies for value, scale and sustainability. Ideas on co-creation of value, alliance building, and a strong regional framework for development emerged.
- T Raghunandan - Rural Decentralization expert, and former Jt. Secretary Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Government of India.
- Dr. Ashok Shettar - Visionary in the practice of learning at Academic institutions, and its development in an entrepreneurial context.
- Suresh Heblikar - Environmentalist, and filmmaker focused on environmental protection, and enterprise.
- Nishka Crishna - Researcher, Human Resource development, and Fundraising professional.
- Shantha P. Doddamani – Grassroots leader, who combines personal aspiration, and sense of agency to straddle multiple levels of change.

Regional framework: Institutionalizing channels of change

In pursuance to the Strategy session discussed at the CherYsh Annual Board Meeting, a field trip was undertaken to interact with partner institutions. A series of meetings with leadership of the BVB College of Engineering and Technology, Deshpande Foundation, Akshaya Patra Foundation, in Hubballi, and the EID Parry in Haliyal were held, and future plans discussed. A strategy map is being drawn up to consolidate value across this stakeholder chain of partners.

Marathon 2017: TCS World 10K Marathon

21st May 2017 - Sixteen runners signed up to run for CherYsh at the TCS World 10K Marathon, 2017. Funds raised will bring the joy of learning across 16 villages in Haliyal Taluk where over 1000 children attend the after-school learning programme at 25 CherYsh Shikshas.

The Annual Board Meeting 2015-16

The Annual Board Meeting 2015-16 was held at the CherYsh office at the Indian Social Institute campus on 11 March 2016. The CherYsh Executive Committee (CEC) and the CherYsh team were present. The CEC approved budget for 2016-17 to raise 11 additional CherYsh Learning Centers, and introduce new vocational training module via Vocational Asset Skills Training (VAST) program. The budget also includes allocation for Training modules on entrepreneurship, quality benchmarks, and local market linkages.

Offsite: The CherYsh mission got further impetus

The CherYsh mission got further impetus via discussions at the first CherYsh Offsite. Six team members, along with the CherYsh Executive Committee, engaged in discussions on CherYsh's plans to scale-up reach, and impact. The group also spent time discussing the Values that CherYsh enshrined into her culture. The Offsite event, close on the heels of the recent Annual Board Meeting, set the stage for a year of greater impact.

Shantha participated in a panel discussion “Pledge to Parity”

Shantha P. Doddamani, CherYsh Field Staff Officer participated in a panel discussion organized by mainstream news publication –in Hubballi, Karnataka. The theme for the discussion was “Pledge to Parity”. Shantha shared the stage with other women leaders - Hon. Mayor of Hubballi Dharwad, Ashwini Majjige; Deepa Cholan, IAS; Shama Pawar, Dr. Neelam Maheshwari, Director of Grant making – Livelihoods and small enterprises - Deshpande Foundation.

Welcome to Alejandra Rossi, Volunteer

Alejandra Rossi, and MBA candidate, joined CherYsh, Bangalore, on 4th May 2016 for a month-long internship. Alejandra came from The Fuqua School of Business – Duke University.
She contributed to the Serve and Lead Training (SaLT) module. In addition her work included Enterprise Building aspects, and sustaible markets. and work with women from the Community Kitchen.

Summit for Women Empowerment

CherYsh participated in the Summit for Women Empowerment in Delhi. CherYsh was recognized for contribution to rural change with focus on girls and women.

The TCS World 10k Marathon, Bengaluru

May was the Marathon month! 22 Runners, and a bouyed CherYsh team rallied to run for the cause of Learning and Livelihoods in rural Karnataka..

The group comprised a catalytic mix of young urban professionals, field workers from Haliyal, students, representatives of corporate organizations, and staff of CherYsh. A unique feature was the institutional support from local stakeholder in Haliyal - The major factory in the area – EID Parry (Sugar) had two representatives registered at the TCS World 10K running for the CherYsh cause.

Representatives from Leading Qualitative Market-Research organization - Quantum Consumer Solutions Pvt. Ltd, formed a large group of supporters who ran for CherYsh.



The infrastructure at CherYsh Resource Centre will be bolstered with online connectivity, and other communication systems to enable regular and professional Training for community women.


Learning Facilitators of all CherYsh Shikshas will receive Computer Skills Training to build their ability to impart basic skills to children at the Shikshas.


The Central Kitchen will be established at the CherYsh Resource Centre, with Food Safety Standards certification. This will enable growth in production and earning from increased sales for women of Community Kitchens.
